A NFPA Research Foundation project focusing on Inspection, Testing and Maintenance (ITM) of fire protection systems is currently underway.  A published report is expected in June 2020.

According to the Project Summary of the study, the goal “of this project is to develop and pilot test a comprehensive, scalable, and extensible data exchange model to facilitate ITM data sharing from diverse ITM data sources.”

The background of this project notes that, “Many NFPA codes and standards establish minimum frequencies for periodic inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) for fire protection systems, including for example, NFPA 25, Standard forthe Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems, and NFPA 72, NationalFire Alarm and Signaling Code. These frequencies are often historical requirements that are often not based
on empirical ITM data or observed deficiencies. In recent years there has been growing interest in
risk/occupancy-based and performance-based ITM frequencies; however, to be effective there is a need for
a more data-based approach to ITM frequencies. While the use of digital ITM data collection software are
evolving, there remains great variation in the format that ITM data is collected, stored, and analyzed. Due
to the inconsistency in ITM data collection methodologies, it is difficult to implement data-informed
decision-making regarding system reliability, ITM frequencies, and risk acceptability.”

Members gather for start of 36th Annual FSSA Meeting

The start of the Fire Suppression Systems Association’s 36th Annual meeting featured presentations by many of the industry’s best practitioners.   Opening keynote speaker, Jim Smith, Jr gave an inspirational presentation on  the value of not just going “to” the next level, but “beyond”.  His message infused personal stories of triumph and failure as well as video selections and quotable quotes from a variety of sources on breaking down barriers to achieving one’s best.  He further challenged the attendees by asking them to pair-up and share their greatest accomplishments, goals, barriers, and action plans with each other.

A new feature of this year’s Annual Meeting was the presentation of unique application solutions by four selected member installers.  ASSI presented their solution and approach to protecting gloveboxes with high-air flows; BFPE showcased how they installed air-sampling detection throughout a famous alabaster-colored house in Washington, D.C.; Orr Protection highlighted the challenges of installing watermist in an unusual location under movable auditorium seats and Protectowire presented the application of their new fiber-optic based linear heat detector in a large aircraft service hanger.

The day’s presentations also included technical and NFPA updates from Technical Chair, Dan Hubert and Technical Director, Tom Wysocki.

The final presentation by BFPE highlighted their approach to acquiring and retaining the best help in a competitive employment market.

The FSSA’s Annual Meeting continues through Tuesday, February 20th.

The National Fire Protection Association’s Standards Council voted to approve the request of the Technical Committee on Hybrid (Water and Inert Gas) Fire Extinguishing Systems to enter the new document NFPA 770, Standard on Hybrid (Water and Inert Gas) Fire-Extinguishing Systems, into the Annual 2020 revision cycle.  The committee’s approval occurred during their recent meeting on December 4-5, 2017.

The NFPA Standards Council is a 13-person committee appointed by the NFPA Board of Directors. The Council oversees the Association’s codes and standards development activities, administers the rules and regulations, and acts as an appeals body. The Council administers about 250 NFPA Technical Committees and their work on nearly 300 documents addressing topics of importance to the built environment. The Council meets three times each year.
